Designs for Seeing

An only–in–New York mix of four inventive shows.

  1. 1. Yale Reinvents Red Hook, Brooklyn

At the Brooklyn Waterfront Artists Coalition Summer Art Show; Through August 20

Yale’s architecture grad students take on a changing neighborhood, showing models and drawings that range from tame to controversial.

  2. 2. The Eames Lounge Chair: An Icon of Modern Design

At the Museum of Arts & Design; Through September 3

Fifty years of Charles and Ray Eames’s comfy masterwork, celebrated in a show of models, drawings, advertisements, and an “exploded” version of the chair.

  3. 3. Sauma [Design as Cultural Interface]

At the World Financial Center Courtyard Gallery; Through September 10

An experimental kitchen, an urban sauna, and a gaming prototype are just three of the contemporary high-tech designs you’ll find at this traveling exhibition.

  4. 4. From Wood to Architecture: Recent Designs From Finland

At Scandinavia House; Through August 25

Seventeen new Finnish buildings by established architects and young designers remind us why “Scandinavian” and “design” so often end up in the same sentence.
