Anime Planet

Cartoony imagery gets at serious themes in these shows by Japanese artists—one a contemporary star, the other relatively new to the New York scene.

  1. 1. MR.

At Lehmann Maupin through June 23

Paintings and sculptures of wide-eyed teens are critical of anime and its fascination with young, scantily clad protagonists.

  2. 2. Takashi Murakami

At Gagosian Gallery through June 9

Murakami largely sets aside his usual candy-colored characters and compositions in favor of a more traditional subject: Daruma, the patriarch of Zen Buddhism who is said to have endured nine years of sleepless meditation.
