Freedom Fighters

Two shows reexamine critical moments in African-American history.

  1. 1. Tony Scherman

At Winston Wächter through June 16

Scherman’s colossal paintings of Civil War–era characters zero in on their piercing, introspective eyes.

  2. 2. Bradley McCallum & Jacqueline Tarry

At Caren Golden through June 23

The conceptual duo (and biracial couple) are showing Richteresque paintings of civil-rights-era photographs, plus a new video in which the artists swap blood— an allusion to the “one-drop rule” of racial classification.
