Five Frozen Embryos,
The Sleepers

Two accomplished playwrights team up to give audiences two splendid one-acts. The first, by David Greenspan, looks at female body rights. "If a woman has the right to an abortion, then she should have the right to her own embryos," chime the two female characters, played by Ilka Saddler Pinheiro and Ellen Shanman. Although they're discussing incredibly contemporary issues -- most specifically the childlessness of their married friends -- the women, dressed in long white gowns and shawls, seem more Victorian than post-Roe v. Wade. And that doesn't make much sense. But the witty banter and simple direction make up for the costumes. Christopher Shinn's play brings together a "compulsive masturbator" with, well, another one of those, and a sharp, omniscient female narrator. The men talk about "being gay and having suicidal thoughts and then masturbating," and somehow they make a connection. Oddly touching, despite its tough subject. -- ELLEN CARPENTER
