The Joys of Sex

Boasting a seasoned cast from Rent and Bat Boy and clever lyrics like "Thrill your fella / Spread him with Nutella" from lyricist Melissa Levis (Wendy Wasserstein's niece), this is the one Fringe musical that is likely to draw a matinee crowd. The thin plot follows a married couple trying to have a baby (Brandon Williams and the sensational Stephanie Kurtzuba) and two struggling singles (Christina L. Fadale and ace comedian David Josefsberg) looking for love in Internet chat rooms and married neighbors' apartments. Impressively performed with delightful but minimally memorable songs like " 'O' No," about Kurtzuba's inability to orgasm, Joys is nevertheless Sex and the City Lite with musical accompaniment. Apart from some waving of dildos, this is family-friendly fare; no nudity, no profanity, and nothing more perverse than threesomes, foot fetishes, and . . . pirate fantasies? Joys just debuted, and already it feels irrelevant. -- JADA YUAN
