A man takes a suicidal leap off a bridge and falls through the roof of Jane's
house while she's preparing breakfast. ("It was a pretty strange morning,"
Jane tells the newspaper.) The man dies, of course, but Jane, the man's
wife, and her neighbor all continue to see him and speak with him. Laura
Grey shines as Jane, the loony telephone operator, in Jess Lacher's superb
and bizarre dark comedy about death, self-deception, and acceptance. Grey is
funny and peculiar, intriguing and tragic, and utterly believable, with
every wide-eyed stare, sinister smile and childish tantrum. Fortunately, the
rest of the ensemble keeps up with her. Director Maureen Towey does Lacher's
smart script justice with her inventive direction. The timing is impeccable;
transitions flow with ease, allowing the action to continue without
interruption. And the theater even has air conditioning. -- ELLEN CARPENTER
