Laura McKenzie Feels Like Makin' Love

There is no lovemaking in Laura McKenzie's one-woman show, but people who come on account of the saucy title will not be disappointed-McKenzie's talent, energy, and comic sensibility make for a fun night of theater. Thankfully, Makin' Love is not another "Let me tell you about my life" single-actor saga. McKenzie weaves in ten characters, giving us more Saturday Night Live than Oprah tissue-confessional. The emotional wreck who wallows in bed talking to a Chipmunk puppet and the spunky Southerner who teaches women the proper grooves to get a man are especially amusing. McKenzie doesn't simply depend on an accent to differentiate her chain-smoking New Yorker and her southern black preacher; she wonderfully embodies each character. McKenzie falters only when she sings. Although original songs like "I Want to Be My Husband's Ho" are entertaining, she lacks the voice and, oddly enough, the confidence to perform them. That aside, it's a pleasure. And between smiles and chuckles, it makes us think about commitment, love, and our own reasons for getting out of bed in the morning. -- ELLEN CARPENTER
