If any show this year embodies the spirit of Fringe, it's this giddily
inspired comedy starring ballsy girls (one of them Indian) as Matt Damon and
Ben Affleck on the fateful evening when they're living off Pringles and Good
Will Hunting literally falls in their laps. Mindy Kalin's Ben is an adorable
but talentless goof who dreams of steak sandwiches and Super Nintendo while
attempting to write a screenplay of The Catcher in the Rye. Brenda Withers's
Matt is the ambitious one who realizes God has smiled on them because "we're
white, we're male . . . we were in School Ties," and isn't about to let the
best friend who slept with his prom date ruin their big break. Both are
terrific, especially Withers. Sure, they play into People stereotypes, but
beneath the hilarious banter and paranormal visits from Gwyneth Paltrow and
J. D. Salinger lies the poignant tale of two friends at a crossroads. A gem.
