Sadly, there's no nudity and a whole lot of dumb, drunken men in this
unsatisfying comedic riff on downtown theater. Sears salesman Jack (Alex
Fry) writes an introspective Off-Off Broadway play about a breakup involving
cops and dead goldfish, and gets his tough-guy colleagues to invest;
wackiness ensues. The grope-filled auditions and beer-and-babes bar banter
are often hilarious. But the playwrights seem uncomfortable with frivolity,
creating an interminable sequence in which Jack spews psychobabble to a
teddy bear. Why? To add weight? The whole venture is wishy-washy, especially
the players, who refuse to commit to any emotion. With a few exceptions
(Christopher Robinson and Jennifer Williams as a couple of hicks), they act
like bored children enduring the slapstick until a better play comes along.
