Second Amendment Club

The program warns you: this performance contains material that some may find objectionable, and Martin, the suburban teenager in Morris's thought-provoking play about the anger that motivates school violence, is racist, sexist, and full of hate. But what makes the play so effective is that Martin is also a weirdly sympathetic character. He's funny and smart, and when he imagines his stepmother being sexually tortured, you laugh, guiltily, because for a moment you understand. Lee Overtree's direction is sensible and real, and Ryan Harrison is incredibly convincing as a teenager-he moves like one, resting his hands on his head and grinning as he tells you about his Website. He delivers Morris's dry-witted, clever lines with a natural ease that makes it seem as if he's really talking to you, confiding in you. Theater should take risks, challenge you, and make you question what you believe. This play does just that. -- ELLEN CARPENTER
