Starfuckers!

John Kuntz is annoying, not to mention disgusting, disturbing, and repulsive. But he's also hilarious, and his self-penned one-man show delivers genuine belly laughs that, for the most part, counterbalance the guilty gross-out-humor giggles. Through seven shorts, Kuntz leads us into the world of showbiz. He starts out at an audition for Xanadu, playing a vexing, no-talent, I'll-sleep-my-way-up actress. The character is as unbearable as she should be. In the third piece, Kuntz takes on Ginger of Gilligan's Island fame; the segment starts out incredibly funny but goes on far too long and wears out its jokes. In another segment, Kuntz transforms himself into the spokesman for Little Piggy Pastry-an actual pig-man whose advertising campaign turns sour, at which point he snaps, becoming an evil, squealing swine who can't stop eating. By the point when audience members were ducking to avoid hurled handfuls of cereal, we were more revolted than amused. The last two pieces, though, are clever and silly, and his energy and intensity are wonderful. -- ELLEN CARPENTER
