Still

It's a heart-wrenching story-at a routine check-up months into her first pregnancy, Susan McLaughlin Karp learns that the daughter inside her is dead. Because the pregnancy is so far along, Karp must still go through the trials of labor to deliver her lifeless daughter. The story is Karp's own, so you would expect her to tell it with tears and anger. Karp, however, keeps her distance. She talks about the incident as one would talk about a cookie recipe or a tennis match, almost robotically. The nonsequential narrative also prevents real emotion from seeping into the production. There is never time for a moment to build, for Karp to move to the next level. Just when you think she might break down, the action switches to a lighter moment, leaving the audience searching for something more. -- ELLEN CARPENTER
