The Last Nickel

This spare, surprising portrait of sisterhood in tragedy may at first seem better suited for Oprah than for Fringe, but the emotional revelations it serves up are biting and raw. In the bedroom where Jamie (Lori Brigantino) and her younger sister Jo (Reyna Kahan) chat, dance, and sing through the night, unable to sleep, their love, loss, and fading innocence are palpable. Puppets appear, as in many Fringe productions, but they're Jo's imaginary creations, designed to express what she cannot. The performances are pitch-perfect, and though the bickering is overdone and Kahan is a little too good at playing the brat, it's hard to fault a story that can make even jaded New Yorkers weep about home. -- JADA YUAN
