Avant Arias

If the Met’s too much for you, consider these small-scale takes on new and rarely performed operas.

  1. 1. “Concrete”

January 17 to 21 at La Mama E.T.C.

The boundary-breaking composer Robert Ashley’s new opera is accompanied by a computer-generated orchestra, created live for each performance.

  2. 2. Dicapo Opera Theatre

    January 12 to 14

Two of Puccini’s earliest works, Le Villi and Messa di Gloria, get new treatments, with choreography by Nilas Martins and Stephen Pier and dancers from Martins’s company.

  3. 3. “The Tender Land”

    January 13–14 and 20–21

Aaron Copland’s simple, touching, and beautifully musical story of a midwestern family gets a much-deserved showcase.
