Statements After an Arrest Under the Immorality Act

Genre: Drama
Written by: Athol Fugard
Directed by: Peter Wallace
Performed by: Megan Leigh, Noel Arthur, and Bob Jaffe
Running time: 85 minutes
Web site: fugardsstatements.com

The long title of Athol Fugard's 1972 drama is somewhat misleading since most of the action takes place post-coitus but pre-arrest. Two naked lovers—one black, one white—discuss economic disparities, creation theories and their innermost feelings while reclining on a blanket in the dark. Poetic, philosophical and political, this rhapsodic rap session isn't rooted in one particular time since it suggests an Orwellian dystopia as easily as it does the apartheid era that defined it. Megan Leigh and Noel Arthur have mastered their South African accents and overcome any bodily self-consciousness. How unfortunate that these two fine actors should be hampered by a poorly lit stage that shrouds the production in semi-darkness. Although a video screen at the rear dramatically spotlights a handful of moments, most of the time too little is seen, ironic considering the continual nudity.—Drew Pisarra
