At a Train Station Near You
North White Plains; Stamford and New Haven, Conn.; Edison, N.J.
With rental cars in Manhattan costing as much as $100 per day, it’s no wonder New Yorkers try to vacation wherever the train (or Jitney) will take them. But therein lies the secret: All you have to do is take the train out of the city, then pick up a car at one of the rental spots close to the train station. Metro-North recently announced a five-year agreement with Enterprise to make its cars available at 23 stations north of the city, but until that’s sorted out, here’s what to do: Headed to the Catskills? Take Metro-North to the North White Plains station. A Hertz is one block away, where a subcompact can cost as low as $25 per day. Going to New England? Take the train to Stamford, Connecticut (Hertz is across the street), or New Haven, where you’ll find an Avis attached to the train station. D. C.? Take NJ Transit to the Edison stop, then give Enterprise a call—they’re less than a mile away and will pick you up.
