- Vandam Sundays at Greenhouse
-
150 Varick St., nr. Vandam St.; 212-807-7000
As any veteran club kid can tell you, the best parties happen on school nights. Which is why nightlife matron Susanne Bartsch waits until Sunday to take over the new, eco-themed club Greenhouse with her army of drag queens, transsexuals, burlesque performers, and regular old gays. Downtown icons Patrick McDonald and Kenny Kenny have been spotted blowing kisses underneath the upstairs lounge’s recycled-glass ceiling, while downstairs, a neon- and glitter-clad clientele gyrates to camp anthems (read Madonna, Madonna, Madonna). Bartsch’s inner circle may have aged, but God bless them, they still know how to throw a dance party.
Best Downtown Scene
From the 2009 Best of New York issue of New York Magazine
Our mission this year: to hunt down not just the best but the best values in the eating, shopping, drinking, and general-consuming universe of New York. It’s quite the process, this, requiring eating and shopping and drinking (all in the name of research), followed by heated but civil discussion, and heated but less-civil discussion, until a winner emerges in each category.
