Best New Beatrice

  • The Bunker Club

    24 Ninth Ave., nr. 13th St.; 212-837-4700

Ex–Beatrice Inn owner Matt Abramcyk has pretty much done the impossible here: design a meatpacking-district club that doesn’t feel like a meat grinder. The underground space—a single room, inspired by the art bunker at Philip Johnson’s Glass House—is laid out to maximize sociality, with no VIP corner or tables for bottle service. (Of course, it’s still fairly impossible to get past the door. Dress nice, arrive with girls, and cross your fingers.) Up front, the long bar, banquettes, and open spaces approximate a lounge, while the low ceilings above the dance floor feel intimate rather than oppressive.
