Gringer & Sons is a place you can walk past a million times without noticing—the R and the I in the neon sign have burned out. And yet it’s not only a perennial favorite in this category, it’s the preferred appliance retailer for many architects and contractors, owing to its selection (everything from Maytags to Mieles, European rarities by special order), prices (competitive), and service. The showroom is a hodge-podge; appliances, like an eighteen-inch dishwasher, perfect for Manhattan micro-studios, are packed cheek by jowl, as they will be in the New York apartments for which they’re bound. Discontinued floor models are available for cut-rate prices.

Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
