When you’re looking to get another few years out of that armchair instead of buying new—and who isn’t these days?—this family of expert East Harlem upholsterers provides something nearly as good: high-quality, economic re-covering. The 50-year-old firm run by Frank Cangelosi Sr. and his son and daughter performs seamless work with free pickup and delivery citywide (most upholsterers charge, sometimes in the hundreds), inexpensively enough that it’s worth it for thrift-store finds as well as heirlooms. The Cangelosis shy away from giving general prices, but a decorator we love recently sent them a set of dining chairs for which they charged $90 apiece; everyone else she tried came in around $120.
Best Bargain Upholsterer
From the 2009 Best of New York issue of New York Magazine
Our mission this year: to hunt down not just the best but the best values in the eating, shopping, drinking, and general-consuming universe of New York. It’s quite the process, this, requiring eating and shopping and drinking (all in the name of research), followed by heated but civil discussion, and heated but less-civil discussion, until a winner emerges in each category.
