Homage
151 Smith St., nr. Bergen St., Boerum Hill; 718-596-1511
The cool kids skating evenings outside of Homage will not sneer even if you have no intention of ever busting a kick flip. Owners Michelle Sauer and Jose Portes are eager to show all ages the thrill of the sport, staffers are quick to learn your name, and there’s a café in the adjoining storefront that serves homemade banana pudding and Mud coffee, for more incentive to linger. There are limited-edition skate shoes from Etnies and éS; there’s also an unexpectedly good selection of rugged outerwear (boxy jackets, waterproof denim) from labels like Bonfire and DC.
Best Hangout That’s Also a Store
Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
