Best of New York 2015

Best Culty Man Clothes

  • Idol

101 Metropolitan Ave., at Wythe Ave., Williamsburg; 718-599-4365

In a tin-ceilinged Williamsburg space that was recently used as a Boardwalk Empire set, the year-old Idol feels a bit like a cross between Opening Ceremony and ’80s avant-garde temple Charivari. The store (opened by three friends from the neighborhood) has quickly earned a following of Brooklyn DJs, stylists, and foreign tourists. Yes, the designers (and prices) are intimidating—$225 elongated sleeveless tees by Rick Owens and $650 denim-suspender trousers by Japanese street brand Visvim—but the owners are refreshingly approachable.
