The Tony Nominations: Who Was Snubbed?

Snubbed!Photo: Joan Marcus (Seldes, Chenoweth), Lorenzo Agius (Spacey)

The Tony Nominations are out, and we can say our predictions were sort of right about almost practically every category, more or less!

There were a few surprises among the nominations: Laura Bell Bundy for Best Actress in Legally Blonde; Curtains for Best Musical; and Swoozie Kurtz for the long-closed Heartbreak House. And where there are surprises, there are snubs! Which shows and actors suffered the worst as Jane Krakowski and Taye Diggs announced the nominees this morning?

A Moon for the Misbegotten. This starry Eugene O'Neill revival came over from England with Kevin Spacey playing the lead but couldn't even get nominated for Best Revival. Spacey was snubbed too, leaving only his co-star Eve Best with a nomination.

•Marian Seldes. The reviews were kinder to her Deuce co-star Angela Lansbury, and so was Tony, as five-time nominee and theatrical grande dame Seldes was cast aside by the nominators.

Legally Blonde. Star Bundy's nomination was a nice surprise, but it'll be tough for Blonde's producers to swallow the notion that the show was nominated for Best Score and Best Book, but not for Best Musical. Mary Poppins, an even bigger hit, beat it out for the final spot.

Coram Boy. Six nominations, including a sweep of the technical categories, but no Best Play nom for this hugely expensive British import. Look for it to shutter soon.

•Kristin Chenoweth. The once-beloved pixie of Broadway fails to get nominated. Does Broadway resent her alternating stage projects with TV and film? Or was she just crowded out of a deep category?

•The Women of Company. Seven outstanding actresses bring down the house every night in John Doyle's complex revival of Sondheim's Company. We knew they all couldn't be nominated, but none of them? You think Raúl Esparza would be half as good without the talents of his co-stars?
