Exclusive Comics Excerpt: ‘Amelia Rules’

Every week, the Comics Page introduces you to brand-new graphic novels by the world’s best artists and writers. Manga, superheroes, indie comix — we’ll cover them all as our editors select the best the exploding comics world has to offer.

Ten-year-old Amelia is about to go on her first date ever, to a dinner at the Catholic school attended by her friends Joan, Hannigan — and Kyle, who’s been head over heels for her since the day they met. But the date becomes a much more serious affair when Amelia learns the real reason her friend Joan has been distant lately, and why Joan’s father is about to go away.

All week on the Comics Page, we’re excerpting a special Independence Day issue of Jimmy Gownley’s wonderful all-ages comic Amelia Rules, “The Things I Cannot Change,” a funny and touching story of duty to family, to country, and to friends.
