Neo Rauch may be the buzziest Leipzig artist on the scene this summer, but he’s certainly not the only one who’s trekked Stateside. On the occasion of her New York solo debut, up at Chelsea’s Moti Hasson through July 28, Berlin-based painter and former Rauch student Miriam Vlaming is showing paintings that are grand in scale (the above work clocks in at 59 by 78 3/4 inches), and rife with the sort of exaggerated messiness her meticulous predecessors avoided. In Rest Stop, Vlaming globs on the egg tempera to create this semi-voyeuristic tableau of questionable rest-stop happenings and to suggest (sigh) much cooler climates. —Rachel Wolff
