Non–Van Gogh Makes Pomo Fun Again

  • 7/27/07 at 12:25 PM

If we told you that David Russo’s short film I Am (Not) Van Gogh was just about a guy pitching a film that turns out to be the one we’re actually watching, you’d be right to roll your eyes — such pomo conceits have become the short-film genre’s stock-in-trade. But (Not) Van Gogh, a cross between public art and live-action animation, is actually a pretty spectacular way to spend four minutes. It'll be showing this Saturday at the Walter Reade Theater, as part of “Scanners: NY Video Fest.” The screening will include work by Russo and numerous other filmmakers — all of them recipients of Renew Media's Media Arts Fellowships. —Bilge Ebiri
