Overdue novel ‘ABC’ shows the kids how it’s done.
David Plante writes in a restrained, classical style that's a relief from the excessively digressive work the kids all seem to prefer these days. His first book in ten years tracks three victims of personal tragedies who become obsessed with the origins of the alphabet and travel from England to the Syrian Desert following a trail of clues. Plante’s conjuring of the gradual revelations the characters experience as they heal their psyches is simply beautiful.
