Michael Riedel reports today that talks are under way to bring Arthur Laurents's revival of Gypsy, starring Patti LuPone — whose performance at City Center this summer underwhelmed both Times critics but was much-adored by audiences — to the St. James Theater in the spring. This is excellent news for every theater fan who isn't a preteen girl.

As always, it's fun to parse Riedel's adjectives to guess who's feeding him his news. Could it be Roger Berlind, "the courtly producer"? The "wonderful" Laura Benanti? Laurents, whose production is "thrilling"? (Our guess is Laurents, since Riedel takes a few extra potshots at Sam Mendes's 2003 production.) But Riedel is right that a LuPone Gypsy deserves a shot at Broadway. Let her entertain us!
