Sometimes I'm Not There director Todd Haynes seems like a prickly, unapproachable artiste, and sometimes he seems like kind of a charming goofball. Haynes couldn't attend a recent screening of his 1995 film Safe at an environmentally themed film festival in Portland, so he contributed this short introductory film, featuring Safe's heroine, Carol White, played by a Barbie doll. It's a cute spoof both on Safe and on his own landmark debut, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story, in which he portrayed the anorexic songbird and her family with Barbie and Ken dolls, only to see the film pulled out of circulation by the Carpenter family.
