Norman Mailer died Saturday morning at Mount Sinai hospital of acute renal failure following several weeks of respiratory problems. A novelist, playwright, journalist, and filmmaker, Mailer's prolificacy was matched only by his outspokenness. In his 84 years, Mailer wrote 31 books, ran for mayor of New York, co-founded the Village Voice, and famously beat up Rip Torn on the set of his 1970 movie Maidstone.
