Rediscover the rediscovery of the year: ‘Killer of Sheep.’

  • 11/19/07 at 5:15 PM

When it was rereleased in theaters 30 years after its 1977 debut, moviegoers flocked to see Killer of Sheep, Charles Burnett's film about African-American life in the Los Angeles neighborhood of Watts. Its uncompromised, pragmatic portrayal of ghetto life — with a cast of unknowns and nary a nod to Hollywood convention — made the flick a must-see among discerning cinephiles. Now available on a new DVD set, this urban masterpiece is accompanied by Burnett’s second feature, My Brother’s Wedding, as well as three shorts and a five-minute work on Hurricane Katrina.
