‘The Replacements: All Over But the Shouting’ rocks.
Like their Twin Cities compatriot Charlie Brown, the Replacements were lovable losers: small-city working-class kids who strove for greatness, only to have the ball ripped away. Behind the drunken punk shenanigans and noise, the 'Mats were rock bards of both youthful desperation and adult regrets. Their fans still love them for it. Number one among them might be Jim Walsh, whose cajoling helped inspire one of the band's best anti-anthems, “Unsatisfied.” His oral history collects the reminiscences of 100-plus fellow fans, peers, and acolytes, some famous, some not.
