‘Darkroom’ Is a Handsome Treatise on Photography

  • 1/9/08 at 2:00 PM

Carlo Mollino first published his eccentric, wondrous treatise on photography, Message From the Darkroom, in 1943. For the next six years, he built on his collection, until the final release of the book in 1949 included 323 plates from 143 photographers. This final edition has been handsomely reprinted with an English translation — it's an absolute (albeit pricey) must for any photography lover. It's rare for its broad range of practitioners and styles, from well-known photographers Alfred Stieglitz and the obscure José Ortiz Echagüe to old Vogue advertisements and social-realism documentaries.
