‘Odelay,’ the Best Album of 1996, Goes ‘Deluxe’
And now, the latest addition to the nineties alt-canon albums released as double-disc “deluxe” editions. (See Pavement’s Slanted and Enchanted, Sonic Youth’s Dirty.) Before reinventing himself as a melancholy Scientologist, Beck Hansen proudly rap-sung about rocking the plastic like a man from the Catskills, passing the dutchie from coast to coast, and doing the hot-dog dance. He was rewarded with critical praise and a slew of Grammys, all of it well deserved. Now, complete with Aphex Twin and U.N.K.L.E. remixes, a track from the Suburbia soundtrack, and various b-sides, the best album of ‘96 can be experienced in its full glory.
