The DVD cover of The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford is all Brad Pitt, stubbled and staring off into the distance; if you squint, you might spot Casey Affleck, who plays his assassin. But in Andrew Dominik’s long, melancholy biopic, the James gang steals the show: Paul Schneider, Sam Rockwell, Jeremy Renner, Garret Dillahunt, and a fantastic Sam Shepard surround Pitt as a kind of perverse band of brothers. They take the pressure off Brad and free him up to strike thoughtful poses all movie long.
