Artist Devorah Sperber Boldly Goes Where No Needlepointer Has Gone Before

Devorah Sperber sees her current exhibition, in which she creates scenes from Star Trek out of thread spools, beads, and chenille sterns, as “an opportunity to look at the relationship between popular science and art, and how they relate to larger metaphysical issues.” These are noble intentions but we don’t need the verbiage to love it: This is Spock’s head made out of multicolored thread spools, upside down. Sperber’s show opens this Thursday at Caren Golden Fine Art in Chelsea. —Emma Pearse
