Marcel Dzama Finally Gets a Little Bloody

  • 4/8/08 at 3:00 PM

Marcel Dzama’s On the banks of the red river (2008)Courtesy David Zwirner, New York

Marcel Dzama’s color palette is so tasteful, his detail so intricate, it wouldn’t be outlandish to imagine translating his fragile images into material — a nice duvet cover, perhaps? Except that, increasingly, Dzama’s subjects are war, greed, anger; his tone macabre even if whimsical. Here, he has filled a diorama with close to 300 ceramic figures, placing faceless, suited hunters amid a backdrop of pretty flowers and bloody heads. This ain’t no fashion show. See more works, including drawings, sculptures, and his 2005 silent film The Lotus Eaters at David Zwirner through April 19. —Emma Pearse
