Want to Download Juan Diego Flórez's Met Encore?

Photo: AP

As we reported yesterday, Rufus Wainwright, his mom, and everyone else at the Met's Monday-night show got to see history when tenor Juan Diego Flórez performed a solo encore of the "Ah, mes amis" aria in Donizetti’s La Fille du Régiment. This morning the Times reveals the planning that went into that seemingly spontaneous moment, a funny little dance of cue lights and wordless communication between conductor and singer. (Flórez, of course, denies remembering any signal being passed at all, so wrapped up was he in the dramatic moment onstage.) Anyway, if you'd like to hear the song — and the long, loud ovation that punctuated it — the Times helpfully has it available for download. Check it out here, or you can just press play below.
