Artist Darina Karpov’s Purple Hills

Sometimes all we look for in our daily art candy is a lush slathering of comely lavender tones, like the one Darina Karpov lavishes on us here, imprinted with dainty motifs that make us think of a Japanese countryside or maybe a flavor the Original Chinatown Ice Cream Factory would dish up. Although, the more we look, we also start to imagine the frozen lake in which the dead body inevitably resurfaces in a Donna Tartt novel. So many emotions. More mercurial works are at Pierogi Brooklyn through June 23. —Emma Pearse
