Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York has split critics and fans, since it’s both spectacularly awful (Cameron Diaz) and incredible (Daniel Day-Lewis). But any city dweller has got to love his insanely detailed rendering of New York’s nastiest era, showcasing the teeming nineteenth-century bedlam of downtown’s Five Points. Now on Blu-Ray, the movie, with all its layers of detail, is just as powerful as it was on the big screen. And Scorsese himself tells how he pulled it all together.
