‘Umbrella’ Watch 2008: Is Lloyd’s ‘Girls Around the World’ the Song of the Summer?

  • 6/17/08 at 11:30 AM
From now until something displaces last year's "Umbrella" from the top of our iTunes most-played list, Vulture will be judging the contenders for this year's Song of the Summer.

Even though it has an undeniable chorus, a guest verse from Lil Wayne, and this awesome Hype Williams–directed video (that implies the song's love object is an evil robot in a bathing suit), "Girls Around the World" is currently a no-show languishing at No. 79 on Billboard's Hot 100, which would be a minor travesty were the music business in such a condition that charts actually meant something. Still, the fact that we've not yet heard it booming from a car stereo or leaking from someone's earbuds on the subway, is a little troubling, since we sort of love this song. Surely this will be huge eventually, right? Not even the coldest-hearted bikini-clad cyborg could resist that falsetto.
