For her grainy photographs, Asako Narahashi floats chest deep in the ocean off the coast of Japan, her camera half-submerged in the water. Narahashi’s shutter is timed to capture the world as the tide swells, giving us a shark’s-eye view of Japan’s evidently ominous coastal life. The effect is like resurfacing in the middle of one of your parents’ slideshows from the seventies — if your parents were, say, deckhands, that is.
