Artist Asako Narahashi Is Lucky She Sprung for the Waterproof Camera

Asako Narahashi’s Iwasehama (2004).Courtesy of Yossi Milo Gallery.

For her grainy photographs, Asako Narahashi floats chest deep in the ocean off the coast of Japan, her camera half-submerged in the water. Narahashi’s shutter is timed to capture the world as the tide swells, giving us a shark’s-eye view of Japan’s evidently ominous coastal life. The effect is like resurfacing in the middle of one of your parents’ slideshows from the seventies — if your parents were, say, deckhands, that is. Narahashi is at Yossi Milo through August 22. —Emma Pearse
