Michael McGarry’s Spiderman is part of a show of contemporary South African art at David Krut Projects, through July 30, which attempts to move beyond South Africa's pesky political past and inject a little humor into the air. We’re not so much seeing humor in this version of Spidey who seems to have moved from fighting crime to office work. Rather, in his nondescript suit and, well, that paper-bag helmet, he looks a little nostalgic for the days when he’d be swinging from this bleak roof. But with MJ at home with spider-baby, it seems everybody needs to make a living, even superheroes. —Emma Pearse
