You may start hearing the name Azazel Jacobs a lot in the coming weeks. His wildly entertaining new feature, Momma’s Man, about a married man who comes home to New York to visit his parents and decides not to leave their apartment, was a big hit at Sundance earlier this year and opens on August 22, and he’s got a retrospective at BAM starting August 15. (Actually, if you’ve really been paying attention, you may have already heard his name.) Azazel also happens to be the son of American avant-garde film icons Ken and Flo Jacobs (who co-star in Momma’s Man), which may in part explain the playful experimentation that distinguishes his work from a lot of other young indie directors today.
