There's never been a better time to be
an actor who plays Adolf Hitler! On top of upcoming
Germany-irritating extravaganzas Inglorious Bastards and
Valkyrie — both of which revolve around plots to assassinate Hitler —
Variety announces today the pickup of
a third Hitler-killing movie, the Faulknerianly titled
Clown and the Fuhrer. Produced by a Spanish TV station, the drama tells the fictional story of a private 1944 performance before Hitler by a trio of clowns: celebrated Spanish clown Charlie Rivel, a Gestapo agent in disguise, and … an assassin! Despite seeming like a sequel to
The Day the Clown Cried, this seems to be an actual serious drama, and it has actually won some prizes at film festivals. If this ever makes it to the States, it's gonna be a dogfight for Best Picture.
