‘Ghostbusters 3’ Being Written by Guys From ‘The Office’!

Yesterday, Dan Aykroyd, while standing in what appeared to be a liquor store and wearing a T-shirt advertising tequila, told a reporter there were "two sharp young writers" working on a screenplay to relaunch the Ghostbusters franchise. And, astonishingly, it's true! Last night, Variety confirmed that Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, co–executive producers on the most recent season of The Office (they're responsible for the episode about the office-chair model), are writing a script "designed to bring back together the original cast of Harold Ramis, Bill Murray, Dan Aykroyd and Ernie Hudson" in some capacity.

Eisenberg and Stupnitsky also collaborated on the upcoming Ramis-directed, Judd Apatow–produced Year One, which means the rumors about Seth Rogen and Paul Rudd wearing proton packs might not be so far-fetched (also, Year One stars McLovin, so obviously, as a commenter pointed out yesterday, he'll play the Ghostbusters' accountant now that Rick Moranis is retired). And since Bill Murray is notoriously picky about his roles these days (and because there'd be fan revolt if he wasn't in it), if the script isn't great, Eisenberg and Stupnitsky would likely be sent back to the drawing board. As long as they don't try to write a part for Rainn Wilson, we have practically no reason to believe that Ghostbusters 3 won't be the greatest movie of all time.
