Filmmaker Myna Joseph Follows Creepy Sisters Into the Woods
10/16/08 at 1:30 PM
Fair warning: Man is not an easy film to watch. Myna Joseph's stark story of a young girl's almost obsessive fascination with her older sister starts off quiet and uncomfortable, and becomes even more so as it progresses. It also doesn't let you go: Joseph's terse dialogue and her gritty shooting style combine with a story whose structure at times recalls a fairy tale (complete with a cabin in the woods) to create a truly unsettling look at burgeoning sexuality and the unspoken bonds between family. Joseph's film has already screened at Sundance, South by Southwest, New Directors/New Films, and Cannes. Now it comes to your computer screen. Be afraid. But in a good way.
