Skarstedt Gallery is showing Cindy Sherman’s History Portraits series through December 20, ideally seen as a prequel to the shape-shifter’s newest work. For the 1990-era series, Sherman transformed into famous forlorn contessas, like the Mona Lisa, Raphael's La Fornarina, and Jean Fouquet's Madonna of Melun. Here, she channels a reclining Marie Antoinette.
