We've been kind of worried about the future of Broadway lately — what with the closings announced like every other day — but fear not, theatergoers! Just as we always expected, the entertainment industry may be saved by cavemen. (Sadly, not these.) According to reports, writer Marco Pennette — who is also doing some stuff we are less excited about — is near a deal to write the book for a Flintstones musical!
Says Variety: "Pennette's script will rely on contemporary issues: Wilma, for example, mulls leaving Fred because he still acts too much like a caveman and hasn't adapted to more modern ways. Barney and Betty tackle fertility issues before deciding to adopt. Musical will also tackle global warming — but in this case, as The Flintstones takes place before the ice age, the characters will confront 'global cooling.'" Ha! Anyway, we are pretty thrilled about the prospect of one of our favorite Hanna-Barbera families hitting the Great White Way. (Fingers crossed for the Jetsons!) And as for casting, we hear the movie version of Betty Rubble, Rosie O'Donnell, is newly available. But let's focus on the important stuff, shall we? Please, God, let them cast Suri Cruise as Pebbles.
