Our fear that Mia is just another version of Laura was unfounded; this is a new and harder story in a season of angry women. She wasn’t in love with Paul (much); she just thinks it’s his fault that she’s 43, childless, and unmarried. Twenty years ago she decided to have an abortion and to dump her musician true love. Now she’s told her married boss that she wants a kid right away and — surprise — he dumped her and decided to stay with his wife. Each time Mia’s resentment becomes almost too bitter to watch, there’s a clumsy NYC reference to distract us. Feeling responsible for the robbery in her father’s Greenpoint store as a kid sounds far less traumatic than being a successful single lawyer.
